Junior Leadership Summary 2022

The Junior Leadership program at Toolooa State High School has been developed to provide students in Junior Secondary the opportunity to have a strong voice and empower positive change in our school community.

In 2022 we were thrilled to present leadership badges and responsibilities to 40 outstanding students in grades 7-9. In targeting our approach to making a difference in our school and our community, we divided these leaders into 6 focus groups; The School Beautification Group; The Environmental Group; The School Media Group; The Fundraising and Charity Group; and the Books for Bubs Group.

I would like to highlight just a few of the successful projects that were implemented this year:

  • Our environmental group was involved in the LEAP project run by the Gladstone Regional Council, which provided opportunities for students to learn about stormwater pollution, environmental conservation, litter source reduction and to create awareness of what kind of waste is entering our region’s waterways.
  • Our school Media group have created a series of videos that have been shared with our local primary schools to help with smooth transitions.
  • Our fundraising group are collecting school supplies in their “kits of kids” project. These will be gifted to the Smith Family Foundation where they will be distributed to kids who needed them the most.
  • Our Books 4 Bubs group provided recordings of story readings for primary school students and continued to develop their mission statement and vision as they work toward being a legitimate charity in the future.

Our leaders assisted with running our annual Lunch on the Lawn event as well as numerous other school events such as 6 into 7 transition nights and parent teacher interviews.

We are extremely proud of the persistence all of our junior leaders demonstrated this year and their ability to deliver services to our community. Over the course of the year, these groups and their teachers had a significant impact on our school and the Gladstone community. I would like to thank Mrs Dearaugo, Mrs Mallie, and Ms Day for their work and dedication with helping to run these groups.

This year for the first time we have decided to celebrate the amazing contribution that our junior leads play in our school community by one member the Outstanding Dedication to Junior Secondary Leadership Award This award aims to recognise a junior leader who exemplifies the objectives of the program and the school. It gives me great pleasure to announce the recipient of this award for 2022 is Benny.
